Launched in March, this special call for proposals elicited significant interest and very good ideas. Competing for $400,000 in funding and professional service contracts, 42 original proposals were submitted for projects aimed at raising awareness among target audiences of the principles of quality, sustainability, and resilience in design and architecture. A total of $222,000 were granted to five organizations for foundational projects, and $178,000 to three companies for the design of a digital directory of materials and pedagogical resources accessible on the platform. Implementation of these projects and materials will occur through the end of 2022. Below is an overview of the projects.

Project: Architectes en série, season 2
Description: production of five short videos on the theme of “architecture, everywhere and for everyone,” using interviews and completed projects (residential and commercial) to illustrate, in an accessible language and format, what is meant by quality in design and architecture.

Project: Using design and architecture in the fight against homelessness in Montréal
Description: production and distribution of an overview of best practices in architecture, design, and planning that have a positive social impact on the issue of homelessness. The project includes a research component, a symposium, a webinar, and the production of a catalogue.

Description: a new digital collaborative space to share and disseminate information aimed at documenting and enhancing heritage interiors, their specific characteristics, and the knowhow and expertise required to preserve and restore them.

Project: Quartier Durable x Design Montréal
Description: creation of a digital extension of the cooperative game Quartier Durable, an awareness-raising tool that helps develop design skills, deconstructs prejudices, and helps people understand the impact of design on the transition an on quality of life. The project includes the facilitation of 30 free workshops in 2022.

Project: nPlex exemplary local projects
Description: public-facing interactive web app that uses dynamic maps and detailed information sheets to present actions within anyone’s reach that have produced exemplary results in design, restoration, insertion, process, and so on.
The support resources and teaching tools to be developed under this stream will be introduced on this website in 2022 as a new toolkit for quality in design and architecture.

Mandate description:production and release of six short videos on Montréal achievements that highlight the principles of quality in design and architecture, as outlined in the Montréal Agenda 2030 for Quality and Exemplarity in Design and Architecture. In addition to relating each project’s process, voice will be given to those involved in its development.

Tool: thematic information sheets on design quality for project managers
Mandate description: production of a series of five information sheets in digital format that explain, clearly, concisely, and visually, the various resources available to project managers seeking to design and implement outstanding projects. The topics developed will be: quality is not a luxury, design and architecture competitions, design panels, idea or co-programming workshops, functional and technical programs, and qualitative monitoring of qualitative goals.

Tool: continuous quality monitoring tool for public projects created through competitions
Mandate description: design of a guide for a scalable and participative quality-criteria assessment method for projects created through competitions. Developed according to a human-centred design approach, the method will evaluate qualitative aspects that are generally harder to define such as social inclusion, well-being, and cultural fulfillment. The method will be introduced during four information sessions and be accompanied by a tutorial to help familiarize users with it and use it autonomously.
