Summer photo competition

An imprint for Montreal —
UNESCO City of Design.
A stencil's outline,
letters in motion,
the weave of a map —
the shape of a city,
ours to reinvent.
Design impresses
its stamp
on the cityscape.

Summer photo competition

________________________________________

The Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design is holding a summer photo contest!

To enter, all you have to do is print the Montréal UNESCO City of Design imprint in any colour and on any medium you like, and then take a photo of it in a location that’s special to you.

You can take the photo in Montréal or anywhere in the world. It can be while you’re on vacation or at work, and you can use a professional camera or your mobile phone.

You could win your choice of items from the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL 2011-2012 catalogue!

Background

In 2006, Montréal was named a UNESCO City of Design, and became part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. In granting the title, UNESCO acknowledged the potential of designers to contribute to Montréal’s future.

To stimulate creativity in the design disciplines in Montréal and improve access to public commissions for designers from here and elsewhere, the city and its partners set up the Montréal, UNESCO City of Design initiative, which aims to standardize the practice of design and architecture competitions. The visual identity designed for the initiative by Studio FEED was imagined as an imprint, a form of stamp offered to all Montrealers to allow them openly display their acknowledgement of the role of design in Montréal’s growth and development.

You are invited to use the Montréal UNESCO City of Design imprint to create your own promotional pieces or personal projects and share them with the design community.

Eligibility

This contest is open to anyone aged 18 or older.

How to enter

Download the contest entry kit (which includes the imprint in 7 colours and the entry form) and the contest Rules (in French).

Print out the imprint (in one of the colours provided or any other colour) and affix it to any medium you like.

Take a photo of the imprint. The location can be in Montréal or elsewhere; the imprint may be seen in close-up or more discreetly in its surroundings; and you can place the imprint anywhere you want, in any context.

Important : To be eligible, each photo must contain the design imprint.

Online entry

  • For each photo you wish to submit, complete the entry form, including the address or location of the photo along with your name and e-mail address, and attach the photo in digital format.
  • E-mail the entry package to @email.
  • There is no limit to the number of photos you may enter. Each participant, however, will be entered only once in the prize draw, regardless of the number of photos sent.
  • All photos will be posted in an album on the Bureau du design’s Facebook page.

Technical specifications

Photographs must be submitted as digital files, in JPEG format, 72 dpi resolution. The dimensions of each photo are minimum 1024 x 768 pixels, and maximum 2700 x 1800 pixels. Photos that do not comply with these minimum and maximum dimensions will not be accepted.

Note: The Ville de Montréal reserves the right to reject any photo that it deems inappropriate.

Two ways to win

Two contest winners will be chosen on September 17, 2012:

  1. The photo that has been “liked” most often in the Facebook album.
  2. One contest participant drawn at random.

The winners will be asked to choose items from the CODE SOUVENIR Montréal 2011-2012 catalogue worth up to $155 before taxes. The Bureau du design will be responsible for purchasing the chosen items and delivering them to the winners. Should a winner select items that do not add up to $155, the unused amount will not be paid to that winner. Prizes have no cash value and may not be exchanged.

The contest organizers, employees, agents, senior executives of the Direction du développement économique et urbain, representatives of the Bureau du design de la Ville de Montréal, as well as persons with whom they are domiciled, are not eligible to enter the draw.

Timetable

Period for photo submissions: June 19 to September 10, 2012 at midnight, local time
Draw of winners’ names: September 17, 2012

Copyright

By submitting a photograph along with a completed entry form, you grant to the Ville de Montréal, free of charge and for an indefinite period, a licence to use, reproduce and communicate that photograph to the public, in any manner and via any medium, and you warrant that the photograph is an original and that you are its true author or have sufficient authority to grant such licence.
