The Borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles is holding a two-stage landscape architecture competition for construction of a beach at the eastern tip of the Island of Montréal.
The project consists in the repurposing of a vacant site on the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River and reappropriation of the waterfront spaces for citizens’ use. The purpose of the competition is to bring out innovative approaches to the harmonious integration of the development concepts proposed with the landscape in which they will be integrated.
The competition is open and anonymous, and held in two stages.
Stage 1 – Call for proposals
All contestants are invited to register and submit their proposals in response to the architectural program that has been set out. The jury will select between three and five proposals; those submitting these proposals will then be asked to take part in Stage 2 as finalists on the basis of the proposed option. This first stage is anonymous and unremunerated.
Stage 2 – Presentations
The finalists will be invited to prepare presentations, with compensation, leading to selection of a winner.
The competition is open to architects who are members of the Ordre des architectes du Québec, as well as to landscape architects who are members of the Association des architectes paysagistes du Québec.
The contractor also invites contestants to form multidisciplinary teams (urban designers, urban planners, engineers, lighting designers, industrial designers, artists, traffic specialists, signage specialists, green architecture specialists).
At the first stage, the pre-selection committee is composed of the following :
- Stéphan Chevalier, architect, Chevalier Morales Architectes, president of the committee
- Michelle Simon, citizen, co-president
- Marie-Claude Robert, landscape architect and general director, Association des architectes paysagistes du Québec
- Chantal Prud’homme, landscape architect, Chantal Prud’homme architecte paysagiste
- Sylvie Bibeau, citizen
- Suzanne Bernard, citizen
- Huguette St-Germain, citizen
- Louise Raymond, citizen
To raise awareness among and engage members of the public with the issues of the competition, shortlisting of finalists (Stage 1) will be conducted by a committee made up in part by citizens, and the finalists’ presentations to the jury members (Stage 2) will be public.
A site visit has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on October 1, 2013, on the vacant lot bounded by 94th and 96th streets and the St. Lawrence River, in the Borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles. The professional advisor will be on hand to field prospective contestants’ questions.
The competition documents (registration form, regulations and architectural program) will be available beginning September 19, 2013, to competition registrants.
Registration is mandatory and free of charge. Those interested in registering must send a notice of interest to the professional advisor at [email protected].
