Design Competition - Installations for Public Spaces

Board Stage 2

Winner

Frost Cloud

“A great cloud of frost is installed over Place des Festivals, made up of 7,777 glowing ice crystals. Suspended over a triangle of granite, they emphasize the site’s grandeur and its emblematic and showcase status for Montréal. By day, the frost cloud catches the eye, like a large sail swaying in the breeze, 7,777 shadows projected onto the Place, whether they be covered in snow or awaiting the first storm. Reflecting the light, the wind is made visible as a literal cloud transported by its own breath. By night, the frost cloud comes to life through movements of light generated by single passersby or in a storm of light prompted by a moving crowd.”

"The jury was pleased with the installation’s large scale, its considerable visual impact within the space, and its poetic character. The installation does justice to the size of the space. The jury stressed the grandiose effect achieved with limited means. The huge roof created by the cloud, and the shadows projected onto the ground, add a new dimension to the experience."
