Urban winter stations to enliven our commercial streets and neighbourhoods
A number of initiatives* have been implemented along Montréal’s shopping streets to attract customers, enliven the shopping experience, and encourage local merchants, who need the support of local customers more than ever. Just in time for the holidays, 26 “winter stations” have been set up in 18 boroughs by some 20 multidisciplinary teams made up of local designers and architects selected following an Innovative Request for Qualification process launched by the Bureau du design.
These inviting facilities, equipped with urban furniture and colourful lighting are brightening public squares, parks, parking and vacant lots, showcasing the creativity of montreal designers proud members of our UNESCO City of Design.
Each station has been designed according to a concept conducive to physical distancing, which has been approved by the regional public health authorities and the Ville de Montréal’s emergency response coordinating committee. The health guidelines as well as the maximum capacity are posted in each station and must be complied with.
*This initiative is part of the economic revitalization plan Agir maintenant - l’achat local au cœur des actions pour le temps des Fêtes, Action #5 aimed at creating winter facilities in downtown Montréal and the boroughs.
