Cities and Design: Design Driven Futures Call for Candidates – Bilbao

June 28, 2019

The Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week (BBDW) is an annual event that aims to promote design and the creative industries as a factor of economic development and international projection of the Bizkaia region. It is organised by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council through the Bilbao Bizkaia Design Council (BIDC), which this year takes place from 14 to 21 November2019.

Purpose of the call

In its fifth edition, the BIDC launches a call for professionals and initiatives from the 31 design cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which, in a collaborative manner, create and prototype future scenarios offering an answer to the challenges facing our cities.

This call intends to form an international team of designers who will participate in a workshop (charrette) to propose solutions to the issues targeted by the theme.

The team will consist of one professional from Bilbao/Bizkaia and two professionals from one of the UNESCO Cities of Design.

This year's theme: FUTURE US! Design driven futures

FUTURE US! Design driven futures is the theme for this edition and the conceptual framework for this call. The BIDC seek to enrich the discussions about the challenges posed by economic and cultural globalisation, the environmental crisis, new technologies and the growing competitiveness between cities to attract economic investment and talent.

We live in a world in which overestimation of the ephemeral, the immediate, places us under great adaptive pressure. Addressing the current situation requires firm interweaving of creative knowledge in the design process of new narratives that serve as a base for the development of solutions that provide an answer to the complexity of a hyperconnected world.

Participant profile

Professionals who work in the design sector or similar, interested in reflecting on the future of cities and addressing the challenges from a design perspective. They should have training and experience in the design methodologies applicable to this call.

Applicants must be available to travel and stay in Bilbao in November (approximately from 10 to 16th November).
