About this site

Welcome to designmontreal.com

Replacing mtlunescodesign, created in 2009 as part of the Montréal, UNESCO City of Design initiative, our new site now includes the Directory of Montréal designers and information on Bureau du design Initiatives, such as the Phyllis Lambert Grant, the Commerce Design Montréal Awards, and CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL. It also features comprehensive information on architecture and design Competitions for public commissions in Montréal, from the call-for-projects stage to winner announcements.

Besides presenting up-to-date information on our News page and in the Press room, this site gives pride of place to the designers and architects who help forge the reputation profile of Montréal, UNESCO City of Design. They are promoted on all of its pages.

Lastly, the site includes news and documentation about local and international Gatherings connected to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network or held as part of the Entretiens Jacques Cartier.

We hope you enjoy this communications platform as much as we do!

Site design

designmontreal.com is a winning project in the 2016 Grafika Awards Contest!

The designers of Bureau Principal were selected among several Montréal firms to create the site’s visual identity and graphics platform. Their understanding of the communications issues and challenges facing the Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design and, more broadly, the technology and identity constraints, greatly favoured the attainment of the project objectives, which were to promote the work of Montréal designers and highlight the actions of the Bureau du design. In its proposal, Bureau Principal emphasized rigour, elegance, refinement and longevity.

The designers explain: “The challenge was to be invisible as designers while creating a striking identity very much in the image of a city of design—one that would be accessible, streamlined, readable and fun. To define that identity, we went back to the graphics standards manuals used by the Ville de Montréal in the early 1980s, inspired by the clarity, freshness and simplicity of the identity back then. With updated codes and typography and the addition of our own values, the new image reflects a blend of rigour and flexibility. We trust that we have met the challenge of amplifying the work of designers while simultaneously positioning the Bureau du design at the heart of the municipal design action.”
