Licences

Since 2011, the city’s Bureau du design has published several editions of CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL, a catalogue of Montréal gifts and souvenirs compiled following broad call for proposals to Montréal designers, producers, and distributors.

Selected designers represent an excellent cross-section of Montréal creativity and talent in the specific area of gift items and souvenirs emblematic of a city, region, or culture, and which are given by corporations and government officials, sold to tourists, or purchased by locals.

Initially aimed at institutional buyers, who are invited to work directly with designers to customize items or develop products, the catalogue is also intended for merchants interested in offering distinctive products, who can now employ the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL trademark under a licence agreement.

Indeed, Montréal intends to expand the sales opportunities of the products and designers in the catalogue by promoting a network of points of sale in the city. Its goal in doing so is to enhance the renown and value of Montréal as a brand and maintain control over its quality without becoming involved in commercial transactions.

Montréal is granting licences to organizations or companies, subject to compliance with certain conditions of use and insofar as this enhances the reputation of Montréal and its designers and strengthens the city’s position as a UNESCO City of design.

By joining the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL network, merchants will benefit from Bureau du design brand-promotion strategies and appear on the Design Montréal Map which shows all shops and points of sale where CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL gift items can be purchased.
