Griffintown Dialogues

Urban Design Workshop

From October 23 to 26, 2006, the Ville de Montréal organized the Griffintown Dialogues, an urban planning vision exercise on sustainable revitalization of the Griffintown district. A collaborative effort by the Sud-Ouest borough and the Design Montréal bureau, the Dialogues included an urban design workshop along with guided activities and outreach events for the general public, concluding with an Open House evening on October 26.

An exhibition describing the results of this exercise was presented in a gallery in the heart of Griffintown, at Lareau Atelier d’encadrement Galerie (1169 rue Ottawa, corner of Murray south of Notre-Dame Ouest, Lucien-L’Allier metro station)

Screening of a documentary, Urbanose No.2: Griffintown and a meeting with the actors in this film produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and directed by Michel Régnier 34 years earlier!

The collectif d’animation urbaine L’autre Montréal led a guided tour of Griffintown, with a detailed look at the past and present of the neighbourhood. For over 20 years now, L’autre Montréal has been offering well-documented and very popular guided urban discovery tours, led by experts who are passionate about their subject.

Griffintown residents were invited to talk about their lives in the Griffintown neighbourhood and what they loved about it. Members of the public were also invited to hear these stories, with the evocative portrait they painted of everyday life in this part of southwest Montréal.

Closing evening of the urban design workshop, at which the different teams presented their development strategies and proposals. Close to 150 people attended, and heard about the outcome of this original urban planning brainstorming and planning experience.
