The Ville de Montréal, Borough of Verdun, is holding an architectural competition for the development of a cultural presentation venue in the Guy-Gagnon building, located at 5190 Boulevard LaSalle (corner Desmarchais) in Verdun.
This former arena will be repurposed and enlarged to house a performing arts and circus arts presentation venue including a concert hall and exhibition hall in Studio B. Studio A, used by the École de cirque de Verdun, will also be refitted.
This conversion will require remodelling of the building envelope, in harmony with the structure’s site along the St. Lawrence River. The property must form an integrated architectural whole, reflect the pursuit of a contemporary esthetic and project a resolutely arts-oriented image. In keeping with the desire to achieve an architectural work of quality, translucidity, materiality and inventiveness must be the watchwords.
The project aims at creating a hub for the performing arts and circus arts in the district.
This is a Québec-wide architecture competition in two stages, the first involving submission of proposals and the second involving project presentations, with compensation, by four finalists.
The jury, which is the same for both stages, comprises the following individuals:
- Diane Vallée, Director, Culture, Sports, Recreation and Social Development, Borough of Verdun
- Louise Cayer, Director, Culture, Sports, Recreation and Social Development, Borough of Outremont
- Pierre Morel, architect
- Jean Pelland, architect
- Benoît Dupuis, architect
- Stéphane Lavoie, General Manager, TOHU, Cité des arts du cirque
- Frédéric Dubé, architect and professor, Université de Montréal
Alternates:

- Antonin Labossière, architect, Rayside Labossière architectes
If applicable, Jean Cardin can replace only a member who is not an architect.
