World Industrial Design Day: Inauguration of a collective work to celebrate Living Together

The theme of this year’s World Industrial Design Day, “The Future We Want,” aims to inspire reflection on how the collective contributions of design and designers can have an impact on our shared future.

It was therefore quite natural that the Bureau du design should celebrate this day by hailing the June 5 installation of Montréal’s first Naelou Bench, on the grounds of École secondaire Calixa-Lavallée in Montréal-Nord borough.

This cultural and social mediation project, initiated by teacher Fabienne Dupont, provided the opportunity for more than a hundred Secondary III students to take part in writing workshops on the topic of diversity and inclusion. The resulting object amplifies the school community’s sense of shared identity and records these young people’s time at the school for posterity, since their expressions are engraved in the bench material. At the installation ceremony, the students also had the chance to meet Toulouse-born Kamel Sécraoui, designer of the Naelou Bench, and learn more about his approach and his career journey.

The first Naelou Bench was created in 2017 in tribute to lovers of public benches. It invites users to unite around a shared theme and to forge connections through expression and creation. One aim of this approach is to rehumanize and re-engage with the city. The writing workshops prior to the manufacturing of the bench enable citizens to be part of shaping the object’s final identity. There are now more than 40 Naelou Benches in France, and the one at Calixa-Lavallée school is the very first to be installed outside that country.

The co-creation process leading to the making of the bench is a fine example of how design contributes to greater equity, diversity and inclusion, one of the 12 dimensions of quality in design and architecture presented in the Design Montréal Quality Toolkit.

“On ne vit pas dans la même maison, mais on vit dans le même monde.
S’accepter tel qu’on est, la clé pour avancer.
Ce sont toutes ces Elles qui m’ont donné des ailes.
Tu n’es pas venu jusqu’ici pour t’arrêter là.
Rêve les yeux ouverts.
Pour gagner, il faut risquer de perdre.
Ton imperfection fait ton charme.
Croire, c’est possible ; faire, c’est mieux.
Tomber, c’est aussi se relever.
Peu importe où je vis, le destin m’amènera où je dois être.
Ne laisse pas les gens guider ton GPS.
Avoir confiance en toi ne fait pas de toi quelqu’un d’arrogant.
Il ne suffit pas que tous soient égaux devant la loi, il faut que la loi soit égale devant tous.
Il n’y a pas de remède pour ce qui n’est pas une maladie.
Apprendre à vivre avec les différences, c’est être humain.
Lorsque la confiance et la motivation reviennent en soi, tu peux dépasser tes limites.
Là où se trouve une volonté, il existe un chemin.
L’unité ne voit pas la diversité mais la diversité rend l’unité aveugle.
La vie est un pot de crayons, à toi de trouver ta couleur.
Si tu ne te sens pas à ta place, alors prends-en une autre.
Pourquoi commencer plus tard quand on peut commencer maintenant ?
Un obstacle conduit à une réussite.
La différence fait grandir le peuple.
Les différences sont l’essence même du monde.
Que l’œuf soit blanc ou brun, l’intérieur est toujours le même.
Qui garde son âme d’enfant ne vieillit jamais.
L’échec est la clé vers la réussite.
Plus longue est la montée, plus belle sera la vue.
On ne peut pas voir d’étoiles sans obscurité.
Sans mort, la vie n’aurait pas d’importance.
On vient des quatre coins du monde, mais on se réunit autour des mêmes plats.
Ce sont les gens différents de toi qui te feront évoluer et grandir.
Notre richesse, c’est ce que nous sommes tous ensemble.
C’est lorsque chacun met de sa couleur que nous sommes complètement colorés.
N’est-ce pas la mise en commun de nos différences qui agrémente le monde?
La diversité, c’est ce que nous avons en commun.”
