“The surge of highway infrastructure into large cities has created new landscapes and resulted in large, difficult-to-manage spaces. Once scenic and featured, these infrastructures today tend to be invisible as we gradually bury and cover them. They are now seen as scars in cities, and highways and automobiles tend to be either rejected or viewed with fascination. It is essential that their ultimate fate be decided: Should we remove, compete with, or learn to live with road infrastructure?”

“The jury appreciated the designers’ decision not to ignore the presence of vehicular traffic, and the relevance of maintaining transparency between the north-south links so as to exploit the embanked expressway. The suggested treatment for the walkways, with successive expanded or contracted geometric planes, would create covered areas suitable for a variety of activities.”
